The Scientific and Technical Network
To enhance the implementation of the Ramsar Convention across the Mediterranean region and contribute effectively to the conservation and management of Mediterranean Ramsar Sites, the Mediterranean Wetlands Initiative (MedWet) has established its Scientific and Technical Network (MedWet STN). It is a Mediterranean working team composed by scientists and experts on wetland-related issues from each Mediterranean country, respecting geographical, cultural and gender balances.
The main objectives of the MedWet STN were:
- to provide scientific and technical support to the MedWet member countries concerning their policies and actions related to wetland conservation and sustainable use;
- to encourage the establishment of scientific and technical networks forcusing on wetland-related issues in each MedWet country, in the form of National Wetlands Observatories or other appropriate arrangements; and
- to provide inputs from a Mediterranean perspective to the work of the Scientific and Technical Review Panel (STRP) of the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands.

‘Off Your Map’ communication campaign on Mediterranean coastal wetlands

In order to turn the tide for Mediterranean coastal wetlands and prevent them from disappearing, a consortium of 14 international organisations joined forces and launched the “Off Your Map” campaign, coordinated by MedWet. This initiative was a part of the MAVA Foundation strategy in the Mediterranean region on coastal wetlands.
The campaign aimed:
- to improve the understanding of coastal wetlands’ characteristics;
- to raises awareness for the critical role played by coastal wetlands, as resilient Nature-Based Solutions, in the fight against climate change;
- to boost the recognition of coastal wetlands’ benefits (economic, social, cultural and environmental), and of the threats affecting them; and
- to influence key policy processes in favor of the effective sustainable use, integrated management and conservation of coastal wetlands at national and regional levels.

The MedWet Civil Society Network
The MedWet Civil Society Network project took place in three Mediterranean countries: Algeria, Morocco and Tunisia. It began on 1 April 2014 for a period of three years, financed by the MAVA Foundation, and brought together several partner organizations, namely the WWF Mediterranean Programme Office (WWF MedPO), the Mediterranean Wetlands Initiative (MedWet), the Tour du Valat / Mediterranean Wetlands Observatory (TdV/ MWO) and Wetlands International (WI).
The overall objective of the project was to contribute to promoting the conservation and sustainable participatory management of selected priority wetlands in Algeria, Morocco and Tunisia through the development and capacity building of an active and efficient community of civil society in the three countries: the MedWet Network of Civil Society.
