The 22nd session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC COP 22) takes place in Bab Ighli, Marrakech (Morocco) from 7-18 November 2016.
COP22 takes over the reins from COP21 (see the article on the MedWet presence, here) during which important progress was made. It focuses on action items in order to achieve the priorities of the Paris Agreement, especially related to adaptation, transparency, technology transfer, mitigation, capacity building, and loss and damages.
25 to 30,000 participants from 190 countries are expected; 1,500 journalists, 8,000 delegates from civil society, and members of parliaments from all over the world.
Workshops and side events will be scheduled throughout the duration of COP22 in parallel to the formal negotiations. These events aim to deepen the thinking, strengthen the debate, present best practices, develop partnerships, and advocacy, as well as to formulate proposals, promote knowledge sharing, and consolidate or launch initiatives in favor of our climate.
Given the importance of wetlands, as nature-based solutions to the impacts of climate change, MedWet and its Mediterranean partners will be present at the COP22, and will moderate in particular the following workshops and side events:

Peatlands, a particular type of wetlands, only cover about 4 million km2 but they hold significant amounts of carbon. Peatland degradation is responsible for an estimated 5 per cent of global GHG emissions. The participants have the opportunity to contribute to the discussion and share experiences on how peatlands can help countries in realizing their contributions to the Paris Climate Agreement.

The European Commission, the Union for the Mediterranean, and the Arab Union of the Maghreb, as official members within 5+5 dialogue, shall participate in the meetings and deliberations of the MGW 5+5.
