We’re pleased to share the newly released MedWet 2024 Activity Report, which presents the efforts and activities carried out by MedWet in support of the protection and sustainable management of Mediterranean wetlands. Over the past year, steady progress has been made, with concrete achievements across the region, as well as new directions explored and opportunities identified.
The report showcases MedWet’s ongoing commitment to safeguarding wetland ecosystems through on-the-ground developments, CEPA (Communication, Education, Participation, Awareness) actions, policy and advocacy efforts, and participation in strategic projects.
“This MedWet 2024 Activity Report aptly reflects our collective resilience and shared commitment to protecting one of the Mediterranean’s most valuable natural treasures: its wetlands,” says María Magdalena Bernués, Chair of the MedWet Steering Group and representative of the Spanish Ministry for Ecological Transition and Demographic Challenge.
Throughout 2024, MedWet has continued to support wetland managers via the MedWet Managers Network, while actively promoting Nature-based Solutions through its involvement in the RESCOM and RESTORE4Cs projects.
MedWet reinforced its active involvement in the Mediterranean Biodiversity Consortium (MBC), contributing to the development of the advocacy strategy and the design of the training programme for the RESCOM project — the Consortium’s first joint project.
MedWet also reinforced collaboration among the European Ramsar Regional Initiatives (RRIs), contributing to a more cohesive network. It extended its support globally as well, helping strengthen other RRIs such as SARRI (Southern Africa Ramsar Regional Initiative), working closely with partners in the region.
As in previous years, MedWet supported the celebration of World Wetlands Day across the Mediterranean, encouraging local events and raising awareness. Additionally, the initiative has fostered momentum around the Wetland City Accreditation programme to highlight and celebrate cities committed to wetland conservation.
MedWet was also actively present at various international events, workshops, and programmes throughout the year, where it contributed its expertise and fostered knowledge sharing among stakeholders.
