Call for Applications – Wetland City Accreditation 2026–2028

The Convention on Wetlands is launching its call for applications for the Wetland City Accreditation for the 2026–2028 triennium.

Background
Established at COP12 and strengthened at COP14, this accreditation aims to recognize cities that maintain a positive and sustainable relationship with wetlands, particularly those of international importance.

It promotes:

  • The conservation and wise use of urban and peri-urban wetlands
  • The integration of wetlands into urban planning
  • Public awareness and citizen participation
  • The development of sustainable socio-economic benefits for local communities

To date, 74 cities worldwide have been accredited through previous editions (2016–2025).

Who can apply?
Cities that meet the criteria set out in Resolution XIV.10 are invited to submit their applications.

How to apply
Applicant cities must:

  1. Complete the nomination form (Appendix 1 of the Accreditation Guide)
  2. Submit their application to their national Administrative Authority or Ramsar National Focal Point
  3. Obtain validation and signature from this authority
  4. The Ramsar national Administrative Authority submits the application to the Convention Secretariat

Renewal of accreditation
Cities accredited at COP14, whose status will expire in 2028, are invited to apply for renewal.
They must:

  • Complete the renewal form (Appendix 5 of the Guide)
  • Follow the same national validation process
  • Respect the deadline of 31 December 2026

Selection process
Applications will be:

  • Assessed by the Independent Advisory Committee
  • Recommended for approval
