European Valuation and Assessment Tools Supporting Wetland Ecosystem Legislation
The project was implemented with the help of many partners aimed and piloted in lake Chimaditida in Greece. It aimed at developing a Wetland Decision Support System (WEDSS) which combines outputs from environmental, stakeholder and economic evaluation tools in line with the EU Water Framework Directive.
On February 2nd, 2010, the World Wetlands Day, a major step in the conservation and wise use of the Prespa Region was taken through the signing of an International Agreement by the Ministers of Environment of Albania, Greece, the FYR of Macedonia and the EU, as seen in the picture below. The location of the Prespa Lakes and surrounding region, which is shared between the three countries, coupled with its environmental value in terms of biodiversity, natural resources, natural beauty and cultural background make the conservation of the area a difficult but necessary task.
In the past few months the MedWet Secretariat has undergone some restructuring and changes. After almost a year and a half in the position of Coordinator, Mr. Adnan Budieri officially resigned from his post in June 2009, for personal reasons. In order to assist in the smooth operation of the Secretariat, Nejib Benessaiah (former Policy and Communications Advisor) was appointed Acting and then Interim Coordinator, until the recruitment of a new MedWet Coordinator.
The 10th Meeting of the Mediterranean Wetlands Committee was successfully completed in Borgo, which is situated near Bastia, in Corsica, France. The MedWet/Com 10 Meeting took place from Sunday May 30th to Thursday June 4th 2010, at the invitation of the French government and the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands.
