Event overview
As part of the final conference of the Interreg EuroMed WeGoCoop project, the 1st Mediterranean Forum on Wetland Contracts will be held – an initiative that, for the first time, will take stock of the current status and future perspectives of Wetland Contracts in the Mediterranean.
Wetland Contracts are voluntary-based governance tools designed to promote integrated, participatory, and sustainable management of wetland areas. The term wetland follows the definition established by the Ramsar Convention, encompassing rivers, lakes, lagoons, coastal and marine waters, as well as other aquatic ecosystems and their connected terrestrial areas.
Wetland Contracts have been implemented in the Mediterranean for over 40 years, with various experiences first developed in France and later in Italy. Today, they are present at least at an embryonic level in nearly all Euro-Mediterranean countries and in some countries of the MENA (Middle East & North Africa) region, namely Lebanon and Morocco.
Objectives of the conference:
- To share information and knowledge about Wetland Contracts in the Mediterranean
- To formally recognise the Community of Practice for Wetland Contracts in the Mediterranean
- To lay the groundwork for an advocacy initiative to secure endorsement and support for Wetland Contracts in the Mediterranean
Date
5-6 November 2025
