Every year, on the 2nd of February, we celebrate World Wetlands Day (WWD) to raise global awareness about the high importance of wetlands for people and our planet. WWD is also an occasion to commemorate the signing of the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands in the Iranian city of Ramsar in 1971.
World Wetlands Day 2026 explores the deep-rooted connections between wetlands and cultural practices, traditions and knowledge systems of communities across the world. “Wetlands and traditional knowledge: Celebrating cultural heritage“, the theme for this year, spotlights the timeless role of traditional knowledge in sustaining wetland ecosystems and preserving cultural identity.
