This year, the World Water Week, organized by the Stockholm International Water Institute (SIWI), will take place in Stockholm, Sweden, from 28 August to 2 September. It has been the annual focus for the global water community since 1991.

Every year, the Week involves over 200 collaborating organizations, a platform to showcase events about water and development issues and an opportunity for individuals from around the globe to exchange ideas, foster new thinking and develop solutions to the most pressing water-related challenges of today.

‘’ and we made from water every living thing’’ says the Qur’an Holy Book, meaning that water is at the origin of all living things and it is the source for life. ‘’ Water plays a key part in energy and food production but as this precious resource becomes scarce, smarter decisions must be made’’, says Dave Tickner, Director of Science and Policy at WWF-UK. That’s why we believe water is key to our future prosperity, and that together, we can achieve a water wise world.

‘Water for Sustainable Growth’ will be the theme of this year. Over 140 events will be included on subjects such as finance, the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, integrity, gender issues, climate change, energy, sanitation, food, conflict resolution and water management.

Water Week considers this theme in the context of sustainable growth, in relation to Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 8: “promote sustained, inclusive and sustainable growth, full and productive employment and decent work for all.”  Water Week will also follow up on implementation of the water-related SDGs and the Paris Agreement on climate change.

MedWet have sent a message to the Global Water Partnership-Mediterranean encouraging the organization to include the “ecosystems’ equation” in their sponsored-events. Water ecosystems are the providers of the resource. If they are not conserved and restored, our future will be bleak.

Why We Should Celebrate Wetlands on World Water Day

 Wetlands are the areas where land and water meet; they are ecosystems that brim with biodiversity and rare species. Wetlands are solutions to water security – they provide multiple ecosystem services supporting water security as well as offering many other benefits and values to society and the economy. That’s why the wise managing of healthy wetlands is crucial for protecting and improving water quality and contributes to the well-being of human populations.
