The document provides an overview of IUCN-Med’s main projects and achievements in the Mediterranean during the last two years.
Malaga, Spain, 13 April 2016 (IUCN Centre for Mediterranean Cooperation) – The IUCN Centre for Mediterranean Cooperation (IUCN-Med) newest publication, the 2014-2015 Biennial Report, was released today. This biennial report provides an overview of IUCN-Med’s main projects and achievements during the years of 2014 and 2015.
Some thirty projects are part of the 2014-2015 IUCN Mediterranean portfolio, through its participation in the implementation of these projects, IUCN is contributing to the empowerment of civil society organisations and policy makers in preserving nature and promoting sustainable use of natural resources in the Mediterranean.
In these last two years, IUCN-Med main achievements included, the assessment of more than 1200 Mediterranean species (butterflies, saproxylic, dung beetles, moncotyledon, anthozoans and seagrasses) according to the Red List of Threatened Species and the improvement of the knowledge of biological diversity and its trends across the region. Additionally, the Red List of forest Ecosystems in Morocco delivered its first outcomes in 2014.
Furthermore, capacity building on combating the illegal capture, trade or killing of migratory birds in the Mediterranean, as well as, sustainable tourism, rural development and natural heritage promotion were also part of IUCN-Med’s actions. These actions were achieved through the delivery of 5 training courses on species conservation to more than 50 beneficiaries from governmental and non-governmental organizations, in addition to 20 workshops on ecotourism.
One of IUCN-Med’s main roles is to contribute to the improvement of governance tools in the Mediterranean region. In this period, IUCN-Med played an active role in the drafting of the Mediterranean Sustainable Development Strategy and its Action Plan 2016-2021, and developed the Alboran Geoportal, a platform to share information about the Alboran Sea natural resources.
In order to strengthen collaboration with strategic partners in the region, IUCN-Med signed 20 new agreements (such as ACCOBAMS, AFAMP, CFCM among others), and held more than 10 international events in Malaga and more than 50 in the Mediterranean.
