The report of the Ninth Meeting of the Mediterranean Wetlands Committee (MedWet/Com) is now available online. Organised in the framework of the 10th Conference of the Contracting Parties of the Convention on Wetlands (COP10) the Meeting was held on 28 October in Changwon, Korea.
During the meeting Greece re-affirmed its intention to support and continue hosting the Secretariat of MedWet in Athens, Greece. With this renewed support the Hellenic Ministry for the Environment, Physical Planning and Public Works will be generously hosting the Secretariat for the eighth consecutive year.
Delegates to the Meeting discussed and took decisions on a number of issues, including the 25 Years Strategic Vision as well as the Workplan for MedWet for the 2009-2011 which were adopted following amendments. Participants also discussed issues relating to the operation of the Initiative and mandated the Steering Group to follow up and implement a number of matters including the process for changing the legal status of the Secretariat into an international organisation.
The Committee approved the continued funding of MedWet for the period 2009-2011 and encouraged MedWet/Com countries to support the implementation of specific activities included in the Work Plan of MedWet with voluntary contributions.
Participants to the Meeting adopted the proposal for the launching of a major new initiative under MedWet, the Observatory of the Mediterranean Wetlands. Led by Tour du Valat the Observatory represents a collective endeavour to provide a platform for the gathering, storing and processing of data on wetlands in the Mediterranean to assist decision making for the wise use of wetlands in the region.
