MedWet work for communications presented at the side event of FAO, Ramsar COP10

MedWet participated in a side event in the framework of the Ramsar COP10 focusing on knowledge sharing and strengthening partnerships for awareness raising efforts to protect biodiversity and the environment in the Mediterranean.

Organised by FAO of the UN, as a knowledge-management organization and within the framework of the FAO/Italy and FAO/Ramsar collaborations, the event aimed to provide a forum: (i) to identify bilateral/multilateral wetlands-related agreements in the Mediterranean Region (and in relevant neighbouring regions); and (ii) to discuss tools for awareness-raising/knowledge-sharing inititiaves by building on past and present activities  in/beyond the Mediterranean Basin.  The discussion for the identification of the above-mentioned tools evolved around the recent FAO/Ramsar multimedia mission to an African country (Rwanda) by highlighting the products developed as awareness-raising tools to be developed for other Contracting Parties around the Mediterranean Basin.

The event also aimed to establish linkages with the “The Observatory of the Mediterranean Wetlands: a tool for assessment of status and trends of Mediterranean Wetlands”, a new initiative led by Tour du Valat,  in order to ensure a synergetic approach to actions concerning awareness-raising/knowledge-sharing within the Mediterranean Region.

MedWet Coordinator Adnan Budieri participated at the side event  and delivered a presentation on CEPA work undertaken by MedWet over the past two years. In this context Adnan Budieri mapped the results in communications achieved by the Secretariat within recent projects including MedWet CODDE, Twin Med, Dialogue on water in the MENA region. He also highlighted MedWet work to raise awareness on the value of wetlands through organisation of events including World Wetlands Day, MedCoast Day and the Ramsar MedWet Film Award presented at the Ecofilms Festival.

Titled  Out of Africa.. Towards Mediterranean Coasts: Awareness arising and Knowledge Sharing Tools, Partnerships and Proposals, the event held on 4 November successfully provided an opportunity to share experience in communications work undertaken by the MedWet Secretariat and delivered a basis for strengthening cooperation among FAO and MedWet.
