As part of IUCN´s World Conservation Congress (5-14 October 2008, Barcelona, Spain), IUCN launches Sailing to Barcelona as an action oriented initiative to advancing the protection of marine and coastal biodiversity. Through Sailing to Barcelona a fleet of boats will arrive into the port of Barcelona for the opening of the IUCN Congress aiming to create an international, high-profile event.
Lebanon based NGO the Society for the Protection of Nature in Lebanon (SPNL) is organizing the project in Middle East, involving an important filming team and specialized trainers to bring twelve children from the Arab world, aged between 12 and 14, to take part in this initiative setting out from Saudi Arabia, to Jordan, Greece, Italy, Monaco and Barcelona in Spain. The youngsters will be welcomed on 22 September 2008 in Greece and invited to interact with Greek young children through cultural and environmental activities that will be provided by MedWet partners in Greece namely BirdLife Greece and GWP-Med.
As part of the program of activities MedWet is facilitating in collaboration with the Hellenic Ministry of the Environment, Physical Planning and Public Works and all the partners involved: visit to the protected coastal wetlands of Skinias, – Marathon; guided tour to Tritsis Environmental Park; educational workshop in Athens; visit to the protected coastal area of Zakinthos and to the Strofades island.
In the framework of Sailing to Barcelona MedWet is collaborating with IUCN West Asia and Middle East (WAME), The Society for the Protection of Nature in Lebanon (SPNL), BirdLife Greece, the Global Water Partnership – Mediterranean (GWP Med), the Hellenic Ministry of the Environment, Physical Planning and Public Works, the Municipality of Piraeus and the Embassy of Spain.
