The 15th Ordinary Meeting of the Contracting Parties to the Convention for the Protection of the Marine Environment and the Coastal Region of the Mediterranean will be held in Almeria from 15-18 January 2008. Among others delegates to the Meeting will consider issues related to progress in the implementation of the Convention including the establishment of a compliance mechanism, adoption of a new reporting format on actions to implement the Convention and guidelines to determine liability and compensation against activity that pollutes the sea.
Other topics to be considered include development of the MED POL programme for the period 2006-2013,promotion of the Protocol for the Protection of the Mediterranean Sea against Pollution from Land-Based Sources and guidelines regarding pollution by recreational crafts.
Regarding the Protocol Concerning Specially Protected Areas and Biological Diversity in the Mediterranean of the Convention delegates are expected to discuss among others measures to enhance protection of sea turtles, reef-derived and other calcareous formations and sea birds, to limit introduction of invasive species as well as issues relating to Special Protection Areas of Mediterranean Importance. In addition participants to the Meeting are expected to arrive to a Decision on the implementation of the Mediterranean Strategy for Sustainable Development and to adopt a new protocol on Integrated Coastal Zone Management. Lastly Parties to the Meeting also intend to consider the issue of Climate Change which is to be reflected in the Almeria Declaration to be introduced by the Spanish authorities hosting the Meeting.
