MedWet Coordinator at the Seventh Meeting of National Focal Points for Specially Protected Areas of the Contracting Parties to the Barcelona Convention, 31 May – 1 June, Seville, Spain

Between 31 May – 1 June, focal points for Specially Protected Areas of the Contracting Parties to the Barcelona Convention met to discuss various aspects of implementation of the Protocol concerning Specially Protected Areas and Biological Diversity in the Mediterranean. Discussion focused among others o­n the development of new marine and coastal protected areas as well as o­n the Strategic Action Programme for Conservation of Biological Diversity in the Mediterranean Region.

An information note was presented during the meeting, inviting comparison of the four major biodiversity information systems currently in use in the Mediterraenan. A preliminary review of the MedWet inventory method, European Union NATURA2000, the UNEP MAP Standard Data Entry Forms (SDF) as well as the Council of Europe Emerald Network are presented as well as suggestions o­n possible harmonisation and streamlining of the fields contained within these information systems.
