A new sluice gate controlling the flow of waters between lakes Mikri and Megali Prespa, on the borders of Albania, the FYR of Macedonia and Greece was launched on 14 May 2005 by the Society for the Protection on Prespa, based on the Greek part of the transboundary wetland.
Financed through a LIFE project led by the Society for the Protection of Prespa, the gate, built over the past six months, is expected to improve water management and help protect biodiversity in rich Lake Mikri Prespa. Titled ‘Protection and conservation of priority bird species in Lake MikriPrespa’ the project is co-financed by the European Commission LIFE Unit.
